MRA’s Hot Topic Survey on Coronavirus Workplace Realities

MILWAUKEE, WI (March 26, 2020) – MRA—The Management Association just released the results of its latest Hot Topic Survey on Coronavirus. The survey focused on workplace realities to find out what employers are doing in response to business disruption due to the Coronavirus.

This second survey in a series shows week-over-week concerns are increasing. Impact on Business Continuity increased 29 percent in the “extremely concerned category” to 56 percent.

“Employers are taking the situation very seriously,” said Susan Fronk, president and CEO of MRA. “They’re looking at the best ways to not only maintain their business, but also take care of their employees.”

Survey results show more than half of employers (55%) are experiencing a temporary decline in business. The top five measures organizations are taking to address temporary declines include:

  1. 46% Restricted company spending
  2. 42% Implemented a hiring freeze
  3. 30% Experiencing a decline, but have not yet taken any measures
  4. 25% Evaluating staffing levels and considering a reorganization strategy
  5. 24% Putting in place temporary layoffs

During temporary shutdowns, of those organizations that do have plans in place, responses indicate they are in the early stages of making specific decisions regarding paid or unpaid time.

60% had no plans to temporarily show down
13% paid during temporary shutdown
17% Unknown
 9% Unpaid during temporary shutdown

The survey also found that daily/weekly updates from the executive team (68%) ranked as the top method to communicate and engage with employees, followed by daily/weekly updates from HR (46%).

Added Fronk, “Given the quickly changing dynamics, communication is the key to calmly address growing concerns.”
