Conducting a job interview is a critical step in determining whether the candidate has the right skill set and fit for a position. A good interview will reveal the strengths and weaknesses of a candidate. An interview done poorly runs the risk of hiring a candidate for a position, only to have that candidate leave after two months when it becomes obvious that he or she lacks the required skills or is a poor fit. When that happens, dollars spent in training, recruitment, and salary—as well as all the time invested—are wasted. All the more reason to make the interview a good one!

Everyone in human resources or management in charge of hiring has probably taken an Interviewing 101 class and heard the “dos and don’ts” of asking improper or illegal questions. Staying clear of asking questions related to age, religion, marital status, or disabilities, for example, will help companies avoid legal trouble when hiring. In addition to understanding the importance of not asking discriminatory questions, it is essential for the interviewer to be fully prepared to ensure a successful and legal interviewing process.
