When using a third-party consumer reporting agency (CRA) to conduct background investigations on applicants, employers must comply with the FCRA requirements. This information is intended to provide an overview of the process required by the FCRA and reflects best practices.

Background checks should not be used as a pre-screening tool when recruiting and hiring. MRA recommends that employers conduct a background check only after a contingent offer of employment has been made and accepted.
