The sizzling summer air is here, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is reinforcing the importance of its temperature-related guidance by extending its program aimed at preventing heat-related hazards and resulting injuries. OSHA’s “National Emphasis Program—Outdoor and Indoor Heat-Related Hazards” was first effective on April 8, 2022, and was set to expire after three years, but has been extended through April 8, 2026. OSHA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for “Heat and Injury Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings” on August 30, 2024. Interested parties can track this rulemaking here.
Employers should promptly review their safety programs to ensure heat-related hazards are addressed.
