Gender identity refers to an internal, deeply held sense of one’s gender. For transgender people, their own internal gender identity does not match the sex they were given at birth. HR can play a critical role in fostering an environment where all employees feel respected, and are productive and engaged.

The transitioning individual will most likely come to their supervisor or HR (or in an interview if an applicant) to inform the organization of the plan to transition. How well you handle an applicant’s or employee’s gender transition can have implications for the transitioning employee as well as legal implications for the organization and have an impact on the entire workforce. An individual’s transition should be treated with as much sensitivity and confidentiality as any other significant life experience. The following lays out steps you can take as part of a workplace transition plan.
