What Is the Employee Experience?

MRA’s own Kristie Haase, Employee Engagement Survey Manager, recently struck a chord with members at our Business Insights event. She opened by asking the room full of HR professionals, “What keeps you up at night?” There were two responses that were quite popular:

  • How can I attract the people with the skills I need?
  • What can I do about the current turnover rate?

Her answer? Focus on the employee experience. It’s the place to start to build employee engagement. And with engagement comes retention. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all checklist when it comes to employee experience. However, there is an approach that, when applied properly, can enhance your company’s employee experience with every interaction from discovery through the end of employment and beyond.

We know that the traditional business method focuses on the customer first, then the shareholder and finally the employee. That’s where things need to change—employees need to be first. Employers need to consider all the possibilities that could be offered to employees to strengthen their long-term view. In other words, if employees can see a future at your organization, they are more likely to stay.

Kristie went on to explain that a successful employee experience strategy is a process that requires a plan, leadership buy-in, transparency, measurements, and an ongoing alignment with the company’s mission and culture. The bottom line is that the employee experience is very much a collaborative activity between employee and employer.
