Our recent poll asked if employers are modifying their holiday parties and/or gift-giving programs in light of the current economic situation. Sixty-six percent of respondents indicated that they are not making any changes to their holiday party and/or gift-giving programs, while 9% indicated they are making changes by eliminating their holiday party and/or gift giving this year. Twenty five percent of respondents indicate they would be cutting back on their holiday and/or gift-giving budget or substituting other ideas.
Some of the ideas include: giving gifts cards or cash in lieu of a holiday party, hosting a holiday lunch but giving no bonuses, cutting back on gifts and holiday cards to clients, implementing a pot luck meal instead of hiring a caterer, arranging a local party or gift for remote employees instead of paying for travel arrangements to an all-employee company party, and charitable giving to needy causes.
Some employers feel that celebrating at year-end should not be scaled back but should continue as a way to recognize the hard work of their employees. Some view the holiday party itself as a way to relax and connect with co-workers in a casual and fun setting. Others feel that employees may come to expect a party or gift as an entitlement and do not appreciate the expense incurred by the company. However, one comment from the survey indicated that its company actually increased their budget for the holiday party/gifts. The rationale: good employees are too hard to find!
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the poll!
