"People don't leave companies, they leave managers." Have you ever heard that before? Most companies conduct "exit interviews" when an employee leaves. When asked WHY they are leaving, the departing employee may list reasons such as, "Better opportunities elsewhere" or "More money at another company" but, many times, after some careful probing, the reason may well be something like "I just can no longer work with 'person X.'" "Person X" usually turns out to be the manager. In other words, that manager has had a profound impact on a key decision in that employee's life.
